Family, radios and fun
on America’s Main Street.

In 2026, Route 66 turns 100. To mark the centennial, a father and two sons are driving the historic highway from Chicago to Santa Monica, operating special event station W6R along the way.

This is our field journal: the roads, people, meals, signals and unexpected moments we find along the way.

THE STORY BEHIND THE JOURNEY

CHICAGO TO SANTA MONICA

The Mother Road is calling

In 2026, Route 66 turns 100—and three hams from one family are answering the call. A father and his two sons will point west from Chicago and drive the entire historic highway to Santa Monica: eight states, nearly 2,400 miles and a century of American roadside history.

Along the way, W6R will take to the air from memorable stops across the Mother Road. We’re not chasing a rigid operating schedule. We’re chasing the places, people, signals and unexpected stories that make a great road trip. Each evening, we’ll share the day’s photographs and field notes here. The radio is packed, the route is marked and the Pacific is waiting.
